I don’t like to run, what’s your advice?

running

Shamu asked:

I need to start running/jogging to get into shape. I will try to mix it up with a little biking but my main goal is to drop a few lbs and increase my cardo. My questions is...what is the best way to start a running program or do any of you know of a great running program?

To be honest with ya, I dread running. It's just not my thing. I get bored to easily and end up quiting all together. If anyone has a great way for a non-runner to became a decent runner, I would greatly appreciate it very much!!

Thank you all in advance for your comments!!

Find a sport you like to do that is aerobic basketball, swimming. Then you will be running and getting in shape while having fun. This way you wont quit on it like you may if you just run everyday which will get old. Or turn music on as you run, helps to make it go by faster. Start slowly meaning walk for 5 min run for 10 then walk 5 more than slowly increase it up. If you are going the route of just running. Also run outside in places you enjoy going by and seeing if you can. That would help a bit too. It will be a long journey but if you are persistent you will be fine.

yeah, i’m not a very good runner either. bring your ipod and listen to music to keep you entertained. start off walking, then jog, then run. pace yourself. go for 10 min, then 20, until you build up stamina. good luck! if you keep @ it, youll be a better runner before you know it! i ran the mile @ school, and after a couple weeks, my time went from 11:42 to 9:04.

I know where you’re coming from, because I use to be the same way. What really helped me was listening to music as I ran, picking a traill with some decent scenery, and running/walking/jogging in intervals.

For example: the first week walk for 5 minutes, jog for 3, and run for 2; the second week walk for 4, jog for 4, run for 2; the third week walk for 3, jog for 4, run for 3; the third week walk for 2, jog for 4, run for 4; keep at it until your running for most of the time.

Mixing up the biking with the running is a great idea - it helps stop injuries amongst other things.

When starting do a run/walk or even a walk/run until you can run for longer than you need to walk. Find music that works for you. I have gone from a 10:15 to a sub 6 mile runner in about 2 /12 years.

i just recently became a runner myself(cross country)

i think the best way to get in shape would be to join a local gym with someone and everyday you carpool with them , then you are obligated to go and eventually you’ll start to enjoy it because you are good at it

o and try running with an ipod or something

running really is a good way to escape from the world

As a beginner just run easy, slow enough so you can talk. When you need to walk then walk until you feel like running again.
Do this for 20 to 30 minutes 3 to 5 times each week. After a month you should be able to run the entire distance and then you can increase the distance by 25% and run 5 to 6 times each week.

You will burn about 100 calories for each mile that you cover and with a good healthy diet you can lose weight.
Running is the easiest way to develop your cardiovascular system.
It takes time to develop your running ability but you will be able to see your improvement and hopefully that will keep you going.
It would be good to have someone else exercising with you so you have a support system.

If you have a treadmill that would be the best idea, or go to a gym with treadmills..

Avoid concrete..try to go on dirt, or rubber track

I have been running everyday for 3 years now and the way i started was very small i ran about 3 miles a day and when that was easy I bumped it up to 4-5 miles a day. You just have to start small and work your way up and buying an ipod or any music player would probably help.

I agree with the awesomek… person but don’t get ipod, yeah they may sound like great motivation, but if you can’t find ways to motivate yourself, espiciallly by running then thats not right…no offense. Best Luck

Go to runnersworld.com. There is an online trainer thing that you can answers questions and it gives you a training program. To make it more interesting so you don’t get bored, you could try to run with an mp3 player if you have one or try running in different places, not the same route every time. I hope you can learn to enjoy running as much as I do!
