12 Things to Think about Before Starting a Running Program.

  1. Check with your doctor to make sure you don't have any underlying medical conditions that could hurt you.
  2. Make sure you can walk before you run. In other words, if you've never jogged before, make sure you take part in a solid walking program to build your cardio endurance.
  3. Invest in a great pair of running shoes.
  4. Wear loose fitting workout clothes. You don't need to look like a fashion model, sweats/shorts and a t-shirt can be just fine.
  5. Warm up properly. Warming up preps the muscles and joints for your workout. On a cold day, a proper warm up can include 10 to 15 minutes of a fast paced walk.
  6. Develop a sensible jogging schedule and stick with it.
  7. Develop a proper jogging form. Concentrate on your breathing, strike the ground with the heal first, tummy in.
  8. Work on setting a comfortable jogging pace. If you start off running too fast, you might poop out before you get a descent workout in.
  9. Don't run on a full stomach. It sounds like common sense, but avoid a heavy meal 2 to 3 hours before your workout.
  10. Drink plenty of water.
  11. Stay consistent to your workout schedule and goals.
  12. Think safety first! Run in well lit courses away from car traffic. Never run in extreme temperatures and avoid running in unfamiliar places.
